The Opportunity

Kaiako Māori often take on additional responsibilities beyond their teaching roles, including cultural expectations and pastoral care, without adequate support or recognition. This has led to ongoing workload pressures and professional isolation.
Culturally relevant professional learning, peer networks, and tailored support have not always been accessible to kaiako Māori. This created a clear need for a kaupapa Māori-led initiative that responds directly to the realities of kaiako Māori and supports their wellbeing, capability, and sustainability.

Our Response

Ako Panuku was established to provide a coordinated, culturally grounded response for kaiako Māori. The initiative delivers professional learning, resources, and connection opportunities designed by and for Māori educators.
Key actions included developing targeted professional development learning opportunities, resources, and communities of practice. Communication and engagement strategies were designed to ensure accessibility, relevance, and ongoing connection with members across Aotearoa.

The Outcome

The initiative has contributed to stronger communities of practice, increased uptake of professional learning opportunities, and greater awareness of wellbeing and workload support.
Members reported increased confidence, reduced professional isolation, and improved access to culturally relevant support.
